The last day.

Today was the last day for Nathan to be a full-time at-home kid. Starting tomorrow, he will officially be in school for the next couple of decades of his life. I am a nervous wreck. I’ve been preoccupied with it all day long. Today I hugged him a little tighter, talked and played with him a little more intently, kissed him more often, and loved him a little more tenderly. He’s my baby! He’ll only be gone 2.5 hours a day twice a week. Geez, the kid NAPS more than that in two days let alone one week! So, what’s got me so emotional? Who the hell knows!

Today we spent most of Labor Day actually laboring. Since the contractors are coming tomorrow to finish laying carpet and finishing his room up, my mom and I decided to put together the bookcase I recently picked up for his room and then Nathan and I painted the toy bin white to match. He had a ball, of course.

Then Season payed us a visit to drop off a “congrats on starting preschool” gift for Nathan. She is the best godmother EVER! Too sweet! He pretty much spent the rest of the day just being a kid and playing with his cars, trucks, etc. I don’t know what about him going to preschool makes me feel like he’ll be losing a sense of his childlike innocence, but I just feel that way.

This evening before bedtime we read 7 different books about the first day of school and going to preschool, etc. that we checked out from the library. Nathan is so excited about going and learning about all sorts of different things. Recently, we had this conversation about his teacher whom he just met last week:

Me: “What’s the name of your preschool?”
N8: “Little Hearts Preschool.”
Me: “And who’s your teacher at Little Hearts Preschool?”
N8: “Miss Jan.”
Me: “And is she nice?”
N8: “Yeah, and soft, too.”
Me: “Soft?! Like what?”
N8: “Like beautiful.”

I nearly cried! I had to write the conversation down VERBATIM so I wouldn’t forget how it went.

So anyway, here’s to his last day of freedom from school. And to him pushing out from underneath my wing just a smidge. (sniff, sniff!)
