Will: Six Months

Dear William,

You’re six months old and you think you’re the King of this house. Well, okay maybe you kinda are – does sharing the throne with your brother count? You know exactly when and how to flash that dimply smile at me and open up your baby browns and gaze into my eyes. Here’s some of what else you’ve been up to:

Friends, Family, & People

  • You absolutely adore your Daddy, brother, and me. You’ve almost strained a neck muscle when whipping your head around the moment you hear your dad’s voice come into the room. Only he has been able to put you to bed without much fuss.
  • You’ve started to really stare at other babies and adults whenever we’re out. You love to people watch and have actually earned the nickname of “fisgón” by your Grammy. Here’s the skinny on this Spanish word:

    fis·gón, -o·na colloquial
    1. (curioso) snooper

So being the nosey person you are Grammy has also been know to call you “Aunt Janie” on occassion! You’ve always got to have your head out seeing what’s going on around you, taking in the sights and sounds. I think your mommy’s a little like that as well, only she doesn’t have it quite as bad as you.

  • Sore subject: my hair. Can you please stop pulling it? You reach for it whenever it’s in sight and when it’s not you’ll pull it out from my ponytail. You’ve also taken a fancy to chewing on a wad of it while I am holding you over my shoulder.

Learning

  • WOW! Have you really picked up on a lot recently! You’re learning about your surroundings like your home, your room, your crib, mommy & daddy’s bed, etc.
  • You love the song “Riding in the Buggy” that we sing in Kindermusik. To date, it’s been used on a handful of occassions while we were in the car and you were not happy. It’s even lulled you to sleep once or twice. You also love for me to sing it for you acappella.
  • You will stay attentive for a couple of minutes while looking at a book and mommy reading to you before you try to eat it. Your love of reading will only grow I am sure!
  • You’ve learned finally that there actually IS something in your sippy cup and you now know how to suck on the spout to get the water out.
  • You’ ve learned how to splash in the tub. Yes, when you and big brother take your bath together, it’s a shower for mommy. You love to just sit and splash and have your hair stroked with warm water.
  • You’re really quite the talker and starting to babble a lot. You’ve even started the “da-da” sounds, for which your daddy thanks you. I am still trying to get you to do the “ma-ma” sounds but you just look and laugh at me.
  • You and your brother have an interesting form of communication. You will actually copy him when he makes an “Ah!” sound at you. You both continue to exchange these high pitched sounds until one of you gives up.

Physical

  • You’ve been sitting up for quite a while but have really mastered it now. You not only sit up but go from a sitting position over to your belly when you really want to. Usually it’s when you see a toy that you want to reach for on the floor.
  • You’re mobile, just not too terribly fast. You’ve started doing the “scoot” where you’ll stay on your belly and lift your bottom and push with your arms & legs to scoot or change which direction your body is pointing in.
  • You love to be standing up on your feet in my lap and bouncing up and down rapidly. I think you may semi-understand the words “up” and “down” since your actions follow them each time I say them to you, all while grinning ear to ear.
  • You’re amazingly strong…..you gotta thank your daddy for those great, strong thighs of yours. You’re going to be my lineman I bet. You’ve showed us your “push-up” leg position several times – you lift your leg completley off the ground by flexing your toes while on your belly. You’ve also bounced/rocked on your hands and knees just a handful of times but then plop right back down to your belly.
  • You’re indestructable. Your brother is constantly at you hugging, tugging or climbing on you and you show no signs of weakness. You just seem to laugh it off.
