Many people who suffer from painful medical conditions will experience periods when their pain is much worse than usual. When this pain becomes unbearable, it can be hard to know what to do for the best, and you aren’t always able to think as clearly as you would when your pain is better managed.

Below are some suggestions of things that might be helpful for you to do when your pain becomes bearable, but you should never try anything new without checking with a doctor first.

Contact your doctor

First of all, get in touch with your doctor because they may be able to get you access to some more effective medications for your pain. If your pain is very severe and you have tried everything you can to alleviate it, then visiting the emergency room for some immediate care may also be a possibility.

One thing you should never do is take more medication than you have been prescribed. This could cause you to overdose accidentally, and as Delphi Health Group will tell you, doing this often can lead to addiction if you are taking certain painkillers.

Try hot and cold therapy

Heat pads and/or cold packs can often help to lower your pain levels down to a more manageable level until you can get more help. It is important that you use heat pads and ice packs as directed so be sure to read the directions or do exactly as your doctor has told you when trying out this particular method.

Try a TENS machine

Some people find TENS machines, which emit electrical impulses through your skin, to be great at alleviating severe pain, although they can take a bit of getting used to in the first instance. They are readily available and very affordable, so having one on hand in case you ever need it is not a bad idea.

Call someone

Having a friend or family member come and sit with you can be useful. Not only will they be able to get help for you if you need it, but they will also be a good shoulder to lean on, and often talking through your pain can help you to cope with it a little easier. It’s not a solution, but it can help so be sure to have someone come over and be with you for a while.

Try a topical medication

Topical pain medications are often very good at handling things like neck and back pain because they absorb into the body faster than some medications are able to work. If you do try a topical pain medication, then it is important you use a directed and check any interactions it may have with any other drugs you are tasking first.

Move around

If you are fit to do so, doing some light stretches or mild exercise can help to lower your pain levels.

When your pain becomes unbearable, speak to your doctors first and foremost, then try out some of the other suggestions above, which will hopefully give you some degree of relief.
