Growing up my parents {especially my mom} always instilled the “you can do whatever you set your mind to” attitude within me. I always remember being encouraged to take risks and be self-sufficient both in my school life and my personal life with friendships and other peer relationships. To me, empowerment of women doesn’t necessarily mean being an ultra-feminist, but rather a strong, confident woman who knows where she wants to go and believes in herself enough to work hard to get there. That’s totally me.
WalMart’s Commitment:
I just smiled when I learned about this new initiative from WalMart. Empowering Women Together is part of Walmart’s Global Women’s Economic 5-year commitment through 2016 to source $20 billion from women-owned businesses.
In a nutshell, they’ve made a corporate commitment to help empower women worldwide to build better lives for themselves and
their families. Part of fulfilling this commitment includes the launch of Empowering Women Together, an
online destination that gives shoppers who want to buy unique and interesting
products the opportunity to do so while supporting small women-owned businesses
around the world. How fabulous is that?!
At launch, Empowering Women Together will offer
more than 200 items from 19 businesses in nine countries. Products include
jewelry from Peru, Rwanda, Kenya and the U.S.; home accessories from Rwanda and
Haiti; paper mache from Haiti, apparel and accessories from Rwanda; iPad and
laptop cases from Cambodia and Nepal; coffee and tea sets sourced globally and
made in America; and specialty foods made in America and Canada.
How You Can Help:
You are invited to visit the Empowering Women Together segment on WalMart.com to learn more. With your purchase you can help empower women and help better the lives of these women and their families. Your purchases will not only be one of a kind but you’ll be making the dreams of so many women come true.
