One of the most die-hard things I am is a Texan. Most people who know me well, know where my roots are. I was born and raised in Austin, Texas and moved to the midwest with the hubs {although he wasn't "hubs" at the time} back in 1999. This whole move was supposed to be a temporary thing. Turns out it wasn't.
What it did prove to be however, was probably one of the hardest things I've ever had to sort through in my life. I'm not one who takes to change very easily and this was no exception. See, that's me in the photo above with just a few of the family members I'd left behind…my sister and her husband are pictured as well as several of my other cousins and their spouses. Being a Latina AND a Texan, family is everything to me. I grew up seeing my extended family on a regular basis. In fact, right before our move to Kansas City, I remember driving down the highway and seeing a cousin of mine driving in the lane next to me. We rolled down our windows and had a brief convo about what each of us was up to and that's just the way it was living in Austin. {Oh, and there's tons of traffic there too, hence how easy it was to carry on a convo in the middle of I-35.}
Having to adjust to life here in Kansas City has made me 2X stronger than I thought I could ever be. When I was little I never pictured living anywhere else but Austin, let alone raising my own family away from my hometown. I left behind family, friends, a familiar city, a great nightlife, amazing food and restaurants, my beloved Texas Longhorns, and countless other important things in my life. Most of all, I left the weather I ADORE and now find myself complaining at least 8 months out of the year about how ridiculous our winters are here!
But having to become 2X stronger through the process of living in a new region with a totally different vibe and culture, has made me appreciate where I am from even more. I also have learned that I can live just about anywhere if I can hack it here. The process has opened me up to an entire new world of experiences that have taught me so much about myself.
