I recently learned of a new movie, Formula Fed America,  debuting soon about the effect that baby formula has had on our nation's children and their overall health.  I have to admit that as a breastfeeding mother I am more than just interested in seeing it.  While I personally believe that breastfeeding IS the superior infant food (I am a card carrying La Leche League member), I feel like the message this movie might be trying to send may be diminished by the divisiveness it creates.

It seems there is always some battle between moms who choose breastfeeding and moms who don't or can't for other reasons.  While I do believe that not enough is being done in medical facilities to promote breastfeeding, I don't like the idea of moms against each other, guilting one another about their choices.  A mom is a mom, is a mom.  We all have the same struggles.

I will just say this though – it irritates the hell out of me how quick doctors and medical professionals are to suggest formula to babies just because a mother is struggling with breastfeeding.  Breastfeeding is a conscious choice that a mother must make if they want to be successful.  For me, personally, I had it in my mind that there WAS no "Plan B".  If my kid was going to eat, he would have to be breastfed.  But I am a seasoned mom.  What about new moms?  At their first sign of struggle, doctors often force the issue of giving the baby formula instead of vigilantly trying to make breastfeeding successful.

This movie claims it will address how "human milk has evolved" and how "formula is directly related to the obesity problem in this country".  I am most interested to see how the film will elaborate on these issues and not necessarily that one cannot be a good mother if they do not breastfeed.

So what are your thoughts?  Do you plan on seeing this movie?

Child abuse isn’t feeding your baby formula if you can’t / won’t / don’t breastfeed. Child abuse is not feeding your child anything. While I breastfed and can’t imagine not doing it, everyone’s not like me. It’s something I’m still working on understanding.

I want to see the movie just because I’m curious, but I agree with you that it sucks that it’s going to create even more division among mothers. I think it’s going to be the pro-life/pro-choice battle all over again.
    My two cents:
For me, I can’t fathom voluntarily passing up breast milk for another animal or vegetable’s milk. But, I’m a healthy woman with the means and wherewithal to make healthy choices about how to take care of my body, which isn’t the case for everyone. And, as a woman who plans to be a full-time working mother, I understand sometimes even without health issues, there’s just no other mentally sane way than to go with formula.
