Creating eco-friendly interiors is on everyone’s wishlist. However, the idea of removing appliances from your, which most guides suggest, isn’t realistic. Not only are you used to nuking leftover food in the microwave, but devices save valuable time. As a mom with kids, you understand how essential it is to multitask!

Of course, wanting an easier life doesn’t mean you can’t lower your carbon footprint. Instead, you’ve got to figure out ways to make your appliances more efficient without impacting their usefulness.

If this sounds like a challenge, it is, but it’s doable at the same time. Here are four energy-saving tips that will help you hit your goal.

Turn Them Off

Lots of homeowners are guilty of leaving the television on standby. Although it appears as if it’s a good balance between practical and eco-friendly, the reality is very different. TVs continue to use 1.9 watts of energy when they are in standby mode, and that’s an LCD model. Older versions will guzzle even more electricity, which is why it’s essential to start turning appliances off at the plug.

By doing this, you close the circuit and stop everything from your smart speaker to toaster from using energy unnecessarily.

Only Use Them When Necessary

Household appliances are so practical that it’s tempting to use them for small jobs that you can do by hand. A prime example is using the dishwasher when there is a pile of dishes on the kitchen top. Yes, scrubbing stubborn stains off plates and cutlery is nowhere near as straightforward as loading the dishwasher, yet it’s more economical. You’ll use less water, and there’s no electricity involved in turning on a faucet.

You can do the same with a boiler, too. Rather than buying a newer, more expensive model, you can make your current model more eco-friendly by switching it to a low setting and putting on extra layers.

Repair, Don’t Replace

The fridge is near the end of its life and needs replacing, or so you think. The truth is that most appliances are fixable if you’re willing to hire a professional. Appliance repair doesn’t sound as simple as investing in a new model, especially a more economical one, but it can make your home greener. For a start, white appliances are notorious polluters once they leave the house as they release tons of CO2 and are difficult to recycle.

Don’t forget that a repair may save you money. Most services are a couple of hundred bucks compared to $1,000 for a refrigerator.

Insulate Your Home

When appliances are in full flow, they give off lots of heat. Usually, this isn’t a good thing because producing hot air isn’t their primary purpose. Still, you can turn a negative into a positive with adequate insulation. Double-glazed glass in your windows and draft breakers under the doors should prevent the heat from escaping, making the house warmer. As a result, there’s no need to flick the thermostat up when it gets chilly because it won’t get chilly!

In the summer, you can crack a window if your home feels stuffy.
