Many of you know that February is the month that focuses on hearth health.  Discovery Familia has joined this effort with their new launch of “Escucha tu Corazón" (Listen To Your Heart) initiative to raise awareness and educate Hispanic women about heart disease, including their risk factors.

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for Latinas  in the United States.  Yes, that is scary.  Discovery Familia in collaboration with The Heart Truth®campaign, have created public service announcements that will feature Jeannette Torres-Álvarez, the official ambassador for Discovery Familia.  They will include inforamation about determining risk factors — like being overweight and a diabetic — as well as wasy to prevent heart disease.  The PSAs will be aired during the network's evening programing beginning February 6.

Jeannette Torres-Álvarez, Discovery Familia’s brand ambassador, participates in New York City’s The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection Fashion Show in representation of Latina women and the network.

Jeannette will also participate in the The Heart Truth’s Red Dress Collection 2012 Fashion Show scheduled for February 8 at 7 PM ET in New York City.   This is an annual event in New York that will feature many celebrities walking the runway in fashions in an effort to raise awareness about this #1 killer of women in hopes that they will take action to lower their risk for heart disease.

One of the other ways that Discovery Familia will focus on helping educate Latinas on heart disease is by broadcasting a special series of programming during the month of February.  "Sábados médicos" (Medical Saturdays) will air at 10 PM every Saturday during the month.  And some of the specials that will be featured are: Cardiovascular Disease programs, (2/11); the documentary The First Heart Transplant, (2/18) hosted by renowned surgeon Dr. Mehmet Oz, which describes the first heart transplant done in 1967; and new episodes of the series, Surgery Saved My Life, (2/25).

The network has also launched a microsite on www.discoveryfamilia.com where all of the programming info and helpful videos can be found.

Here's to better heart health, amigas!
