Cusomized Vitamins!

Okay, i went to my MIL’s yesterday to pick up n8 after he’d been there all afternoon and my MIL asked me to help her with some instructions on a “DNA Test Kit” she bought! I immediately asked her what she was needing to have her DNA analyzed for??!! She told me that she had bought this kit that will allow you to have your DNA analyzed by a lab that will then give you precise information about your individual nutritional needs and body chemistry!!! WOW!! I was intrigued.

So, we sat and watched the DVD that came with the kit so i could sort of “translate” and let her know what all it entailed. Basically, you swab the inside of your mouth (on both sides of your cheeks), fill out this nutritional questionnaire that asks about how often you eat certain vegetables, meats, sodas, consume alcohol, use tobacco, etc. Then, you pack up the swabs and the questionnaire and place it in a postage paid envelope and send it off to the lab. Then, the lab analyzes it with super-duper high tech machinery, that uses WAY too much biology and chemistry for my taste. Then, they print off a customized bound report that talks about what your genes are comprised of, where you are lacking (nutritionally), and how your body metabolizes certain foods, vitamins, and ingredients. The report also includes detailed information about what foods your particular body needs and basically tells what you should be eating more or less of, like certain vegetables and meats, etc. (I probably am eating WAY too much red meat for what my body really needs!)

Then, as if that weren’t enough, they create a specific “recipe” for vitamin supplements for you that you can then purchase and use. The vitamin is customized to your particular body’s needs!!

I guess just taking a regular Centrum or other vitamin isn’t really enough! I am so intrigued by this technology! I told David i want to get one of those kits, but then realized they retail for $250. I am going to see if my MIL can get it cheaper for me since she is a rep for the company providing it. I really would like to get a customized vitamin, but mostly just want to see what my “genes” say about me! 🙂
