It occurred to me today, as I was driving on the slushy, snow-ridden roads on my way to get a haircut and color, that we all (as humans) have our own unique and incredibly special gifts. I mean, I know I've thought that before but for some reason, while I was driving in the silence, today it just sort of "hit me" that I need to be more in-tune with my gifts and my talents and skill set.
I was recently invited to participate in an upcoming blogger panel (which I am UBER excited about but just can't talk about yet!), and it just hit me like a ton of bricks like nothing else ever has. THIS is what I love doing. THIS is where and how I feel most fulfilled — aside from motherhood, of course.
And I'm not just referring to "blogging" but this whole realm of social media and publicity that I've found myself to be a part of over the past few years. I have loved helping other businesses and entities figure things out with regard to websites, publicity, and social media. It's where I feel most comfortable and happy. I recently answered a question on a blogger survey about what I studied in college versus what actually came to fruition in my life. For example, the survey wanted to know if you originally studied to become a teacher or doctor, or whatever. I had to answer "other" because my circumstance was not represented in the survey. I was a Communcations/Advertising/Mass Media gal and still to this day consider myself as such. The only thing I remember wanting to do when I "grew up" was not have anyone tell me what to do — be my own boss. And, I think it's worked out pretty well for me thus far!
So, how does this tie in with the post about each person's unique gifts and talents? It occurred to me today that I simply can't BE all TO all. There are x-number of things that I am truly gifted with and x-number I am certainly not, and not that I even care to be, but I simply am not wired for such things. Some examples of what my gifts are NOT == craftiness, creativity (you know, being able to take an old piece of something and pretty it up enough to be featured on Nate Berkus), cooking (ugh!), sewing, photography, picture-perfect home decor, and the list goes on!
But, I know what I CAN do in this lifetime, and do it WELL. It's so easy to get caught up in the day-to-day comparisons of what someone else has going on in their life that's great. But when we do this, we lose sight of what we've got to offer the world. So, my hope for you is that you figure out what your "something" is and make that your focus from now on. Be happy for others and their gifts while taking the time to bask in the glory of your own!
