Since I’m on vacation my usual {friday finds} segments will not be posted this week.  Rest assured however, that while I’ve been chillaxin’ on the beach, I’ve found some amazing things in the blogosphere that I can’t wait to share with ya’ll in just one week!

As I sit here and type this out while on the road back home (with Monsters vs. Aliens movie playing), I wonder how many of you even remember road trip days back before there was Nintendo DS, iPads, and DVD players in cars?!  I mean, seriously what kid even needs a destination when it comes to road trippin’ when the journey itself is a vacation?!

I remember traveling with my parents as a kid and my ride was nowhere near as entertaining as my kids’.  I remember making the longest drive ever from Austin to Caifornia.  In between we stopped in New Mexico, Utah, and Vegas.  I’m sure we stopped in other places but those are the only ones I remember or was awake for.  That’s pretty much all there was to do on road trips back in the day – sleep! Meanwhile my kids have done no such thing.  Not that I mind it since we ARE, after all, on vacation.  It just blows my mind how much kids have at their fingertips to help pass the time.

When we get home, they’ll be TOTALLY unplugged . . . and then I’ll hear the complaining!

My parents were always amazed at how much I could sleep during road trips. That’s all I would do except read. I would read a chapter, sleep for 50 miles. Read another chapter. Sleep for the next 50 miles. There was nothing else to do.

I remember a trip to Las Vegas when I was about 8 or 9. We STOOD in the back seat. No seatbelts if you can even imagine. Totally dating myself here… just a pillow to keep us occupied. I think road trips now are a LOT more fun. Hard to be bored with all the toys one can bring 🙂
