Most of us want to look and feel our best, and for many of us, that starts with our skin. After all, no matter what we are wearing or what we are doing, we will all have some skin on show even if it is just the skin on our face, and when that skin looks youthful and vibrant, we look and feel more confident than when it is dull, dry and aging.
Healthy skin gives the impression that we are healthy people full of vitality and in a good state of health, and of course, it is likely to be true that if you straw healthy and take good care of yourself, your skin will be healthy too. The opposite is also true and unhealthy-looking skin can be a sign of some underlying issue.
With that in mind, let’s take a look at some tell-tale signs of unhealthy skin so you can deal with the underlying issues, and start looking and feeling better as soon as possible.
Dry and scaly skin
If your skin is dry and/or scaly, then it could just be that you have been using products that are too harsh for you in your skincare regime, and you may need to switch to products designed for sensitive bodies. However, it could also be a sign that you have a skin condition like eczema or psoriasis, so it is really important that you rule both out, and while you do, that you stop using anything harsh on your skin because certain fragrances and other ingredients used in soaps, shower gels, and moisturizers can make skin conditions that cause dryness and scaling much worse. Go natural until you can see a dermatologist.
Acne
Acne is not just one thing, there are many common acne types and they may all have different causes, but one thing is for sure – if you have acne it is a clear sign that your skin is not as healthy as it could be.
Acne can be caused by everything from a hormonal imbalance to skin that produces too much oil, so it is never a bad idea to consult a dermatologist if you have acne that you cannot clear up by washing more often and using the right over-the-counter acne treatments.
Blotchiness
If your skin is blotchy or uneven, then this could be an indicator that you have not been looking after yourself as well as you should. Often blotchiness and uneven skin can be caused by dehydration, which means you need to drink more water.
Another possibility could be that you have not been getting enough sleep. Or it might be that you have not been eating a nutritious enough diet, and it has started to affect your skin.
You may have an idea which of these issues could be behind your blotchy and uneven skin, but if you are not so sure, try improving upon all three issues and you will probably find that it helps. If there is no improvement after you start looking after yourself a bit better, then see a dermatologist because it could be that your skin needs a little more help.
Dark spots
Most people do not develop dark spots on their skin until they reach middle age. If you have noticed dark spots starting to appear on your body, then it could be a sign that your skin has experienced sun damage and it is probably a good idea to make an appointment with your skin doctor to check that it is nothing too serious.
Other things that can cause dark spots to appear on the skin include liver damage, Addison's disease, and tumors, so seeing a doctor if you are worried is vitally important.
In the meantime, try to stay out of the sun, and wear a high SPF sunscreen when you do to prevent any further UV damage, and you will be able to minimize the number of dark spots caused by UV, that appear as you get older. You can also try something like Gundry MD Dark Spot Diminisher which is designed to address age-related dark spots and hyperpigmentation and minimize any notable signs of aging; while giving skin a revitalized and younger-looking appearance.
Chapped lips
If your lips are chapped then this is a clear sign that all is not well with the sensitive skin that makes up your lips. Most often, chapped lips are caused by dehydration or prolonged exposure to dry air.
The skin on your lips is far thinner than the skin on the rest of your body and it does not produce lots of oil like the rest of your skin, so using a chapstick to keep your lips hydrated will help to keep them healthy in most cases.
Sometimes, chapped lips can be a sign that you have one or more vitamin deficiencies, so if moisturizing them alone does not help, it may be useful to speak to your doctor and have some vitamin deficiency tests carried out to determine if the problem might be more serious.
Premature aging
We will all get older and as we get older, wrinkles and fine lines are inevitable. However, if you have a lot of wrinkles at a young age or your wrinkles and fine lines are deeper than average, it could indicate you are unhealthy. Smoking, for example, is a prime cause of premature aging and it is bad for not only your skin, but your whole body. Sun exposure is another cause of premature aging that makes your skin less healthy and could, like smoking, cause you to develop cancer in the future. Giving up smoking. Spending less time in the sun, and improving your skincare rehome will all help with this particular issue.
Flaking
If your skin is flaky or scaly, it could be a sign that you have eczema or another skin condition that needs medical attention and the right medication to improve. See a doctor as soon as possible.
If you spot any of these tell-tale signs of unhealthy skin, then it may be a good idea to try out some of the remedies included or see your dermatologist if you are really worried. You can bring your skin back to good health.
