A home should be somewhere that you can relax. One way to make this relaxation possible is to design and furnish your home as if it were a private spa. Below are just some of the various spa-like upgrades that could help you to unwind.

Install a hot tub

Many of us dream of being able to take a soak in a hot tub in our backyard at the end of a hard day. What many of us don’t realize is just how achievable owning a hot tub is. While in-ground custom hot tubs can indeed cost tens of thousands to install, there are many cheaper options including inflatable hot tubs for less than $500. Hot tubs do require quite a bit of maintenance, but you can use them all year round (adding a gazebo over the top could make it possible to use them even in the rain).

Build a sauna

To help you warm up in winter, why not also consider building a sauna in your backyard? You can buy outdoor saunas for home use that you can assemble yourself. This includes saunas with electric heaters and saunas with wood fire heaters. You may even find that you can convert your shed into a sauna. Indoor saunas can be a little more tricky to find space for, but could be possible to integrate into a basement or even a loft.

Buy a massage chair

Why settle for a regular armchair when you can buy a massage chair? Such chairs are able to vibrate in order to provide a massage to key parts of your body such as your back and legs. This chair could be placed in a living room where you and your guests can use it while watching TV, or you could place it in a bedroom for private use. Massage chairs can vary a lot in cost – it’s worth taking the time to shop around.

Try some aromatherapy

Aromatherapy involves using scents to improve one’s mood. There are scents that can energize us and scents that can improve sleep quality. These scents can be introduced to our home through scented candles, oil diffusers, incense sticks or air fresheners. Consider exploring different ways of introducing aromas to your home. The bathroom, bedroom and living room are three places where these aromas could have the biggest impact in helping you relax.

Experiment with ambient lighting

It can be hard to relax if the lighting is too harsh. Ambient lighting is designed to be soft and warm and can be worth incorporating into rooms around your home. Candles are one way to provide an ambient glow. This glow can be amplified with lanterns and salt rock candle holders. You can also experiment with electric ambient lighting. This could include LED bars that can be programmed to glow in various different colors.

Invest in super soft towels

The towels used in spa retreats are often made from luxury cotton that is super soft. Consider whether it’s worth buying yourself some of these towels to recreate the spa experience in your home. You can also look into towel bath robes that are ideal for relaxing in after a warm bath (or dip in the hot tub).

Upgrade your bath products

There are many luxury products that can make baths much more relaxing. This includes scented soaps and bath oils, fragrant bath bombs, bubble bath oils, super soft sponges and super soft flannels. Try treating yourself to some of these products instead of using generic bath products.

Set up a bath caddy

A bath caddy can provide somewhere for propping items while you’re bathing. This could include soaps and sponges, or it could include candles. You could even prop a book here to read in the bath, a portable speaker for listening to music or a glass of wine to sip as you bathe. Caddies usually take the form of wooden trays that sit over the top of the bath, but can also take the form of trolleys that you can place beside the bath.

Add underfloor heating to your bathroom

Bathrooms can often get cold in the winter, which can make getting out of the bath an unpleasant experience. Underfloor bathroom heating is a great way to keep your bathroom warm. Consider investing in this for your bathroom.

Upgrade your bedding

A relaxing home environment will help to improve your sleep quality. But your bedding is ultimately the thing that will make the biggest difference to how well you sleep. If you currently use cheap bedding, consider looking into some high quality sheets and pillows. Of course, investing in a good quality mattress is important too.
